Dry ice machine produces
80kg per hour
February 2008: Seafood Processor

DENMARK-based dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) specialist Triventek has launched its newly upgraded dry ice production equipment: the PE80 Petlletizer and RE80 waste gas Recovery Unit.

The machines can now produce 80kg per hour (previously 45kg per hour) of dry ice in pellets ranging from 3 to 16mm in diameter.

The RE80 recovers the 'revert' gas which is normally simply vented, and can halve the cost of dry ice compared to buying it in, the company says.   Processors and shippers in locations with developing industrial infrastructure could also potentially benefit by reducing the frequency of LCO 2 (liquid carbon dioxide) deliveries or the size of storage vessels.

'Dry ice is increasingly used to maintain desired temperature during shipping of seafood, both frozen and as a supplement to water ice,' says company spokesman Craig Booth.   'Reducing both the weight and volume of shipments, dry ice also acts bacteriostatically to improve microbiological control, product quality and longevity, according to academic studies in India, Vietnam and the Philippines.'

Triventek provides detailed spreadsheets on the company website so that users can estimate the economics of making dry ice on site, based on local market conditions.   'Logistics and shipping managers like having dry ice production capability on site because they can respond quickly to changes in demand, since they do not have to wait for deliveries of dry ice from often remote factories,' Booth comments.

'Until now, high cost and the poor availability in their location have meant that many processors and shippers have not been able to take up the reputed cost and quality benefits of using dry ice.   Our newly upgraded dry ice production equipment is offered to solve these problems through low equipment cost and extremely high efficiency in converting liquid carbon dioxide to dry ice, wich Triventek has successfully patented.'
